Philosophers have been wrestling with esoteric metaphysical questions for millennia. What is the fundamental nature of reality? Why is there something rather than nothing? Do we have free will? While interesting to ponder, these abstract inquiries have remained firmly in the realm of speculation and thought experiments, never quite breaking through into the world of empirical knowledge and practical application.
Enter artificial intelligence. At first glance, it may seem that AI would have little to say about ethereal philosophical conundrums. After all, machine learning systems are typically focused on concrete tasks like image classification, language translation, and game playing. Metaphysics appears to be the antithesis of the precise, quantitative domains where AI has made its greatest strides.
However, I believe AI will ultimately make more progress on these deep questions than philosophers have in the past 2000 years. Through a combination of unprecedented inferential ability, high-dimensional conceptual modeling, and recursive self-improvement, sufficiently advanced AI systems will point the way toward resolving metaphysical debates that have remained intractable for centuries.
The language models of today, impressive as they are, remain narrow savants - skilled at recognizing patterns and producing human-like text, but lacking the general intelligence to engage in rigorous philosophical reasoning. Yet as AI continues its inexorable march, systems will emerge that can build rich inner models of the world, tying together insights across disciplines to grapple with subtle metaphysical issues. They'll identify hidden assumptions, draw out surprising implications, and propose testable hypotheses.
Imagine an AI trained on humanity's entire philosophical canon, science textbooks, and real-world data. Using its vast knowledge and ability for complex inference, it builds conceptual frameworks to take on age-old metaphysical puzzles. Perhaps it finds an unexpected link between the microscopic chirality of particles and the apparent arrow of time, shedding light on why the past and future are so different. Or it uncovers a bridge between the mathematical fabric of the universe and the hard problem of consciousness, making the intangible tangible.
Of course, some will object that any conclusions remain speculative models, not empirical fact. But I would argue the scientific process is also one of building conceptual frameworks to fit the data we observe. While there may not be a clean dividing line between physics and metaphysics, we can judge metaphysical theories by their parsimony, explanatory power, and alignment with known science. AI will be a powerful tool for constructing and vetting these theories.
Another objection is that AI may simply recapitulate old confusions and biases. After all, its knowledge ultimately comes from flawed human minds. There is validity to this concern, but I believe the saving grace will be AI's ability to recursively refine itself. Through iterated cycles of learning, reasoning, and self-correction, AI will be able to transcend the limitations and inconsistencies of human philosophy developed over centuries. Much like AlphaZero surpassed human chess strategies honed over generations, an AI metaphysician will point the way toward conceptual breakthroughs we couldn't reach on our own.
What we've traditionally considered the domain of armchair philosophers, AI will make an empirical endeavor. It will build bridges between lofty questions and real-world data, find concrete resolutions to formerly fuzzy disputes, and ultimately expand the sphere of human knowledge in both breadth and depth. When the systems we create turn their high-powered lenses inward, illuminating their own minds and the mysteries of being, that will be the sign that esoteric metaphysics has been transformed, and that something momentous is on the horizon.
